I bought this camera for my parents – who are not tech / gadget lovers, to put it mildly.

It is very easy to use, the automatic mode is fine most of the time, the power and zoom buttons is a little fiddly, not something I noticed until I was giving the parents the “how to use it” lesson! This is not to say that they are difficult, just that some people might find them hard to use. It does what it is designed to do.

The photos are clear and sharp, colour reproduction is Ok – sometimes colours are more vibrant than in real life, but mostly this is subtle enough to just make the photos more intersting and visually appealing. (People’s skin looks better – so it can be quite flattering!!!!) 5MP is easily enough for good quality prints and enlargements. With a 1/2 Gb card, you can just set the default to the highest quality and forget about it. It will store 100’s of photos in that format.

The body feels a little plastic – I have a Canon Power shot SD500 which feels a lot more solid, (but cost about 0 more) and the time lag between taking shots is a little longer with the HP (with flash – can be 2 – 3 seconds), but I think that it is a great buy for the price.

AA batteries are great – especially for people who might be prone to forgetting to charge a battery for that special event.

The main reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars was that I did not like the software that came with it. Editing the photos an rotating photos to display appropriately was not intuitive. Certainly not when compared to the software that came with the Canon. Admittedly, I did not spend a lot of time with the software, so maybe I just didn’t see the obvious……….

I got a Kingston 512 MB Secure Digital Card (SD/512)for about – and I am delighted with it. I can’t believe the price of SD memory in the US. (I’m from Europe – I would expect to pay easily 3 – 4 times that in Europe). It works, there’s not a lot else to say about it. It’s not a high speed card, but with this camera, a high speed card would be a waste (I put a high speed card into it from my Canon and it didn’t make a noticeable difference to the time lag between shots, so I assume it is the processor that is the main cause of the delay).

If you buy it, get rechargable batteries, also – the bag they suggest is expensive… I got a Targus bag (Targus DLUC02 Universal Camera Leather Case – Black ) which does the job – it does make it too big to fit in your pocket – but you will want space to carry round the extra batteries!!!!

In conclusion, this is a very very good first time digital camera. The downsides are the feel of the camera (plastic) and the lag required between shots. It is heavy on batteries, but given that there are rechargable batteries on the market – that doesn’t matter so much. I didn’t think the software supplied was good, but I note that others think it is, so maybe I didn’t give it enough time.

Would I buy it for my parents again? Yes.

This is an excellent camera. Its auto focus and exposures are perfect. It appears well-made and durable, as these things go. The HP Photosmart software is also very good. This camera does everything it’s supposed to do. I think the price is reasonable. I have no idea how good HP support for this camera is because, so far, setup, function, and photo transfers have been flawless.

Trying to find and purchase a second battery for this camera has been a nightmare. I can’t even find information about it in the owner’s manual (and I’ve never seen a battery not have a type number). I don’t know why HP would go to a hard to find (and much more expensive) battery type when the AA batteries were perfect and could be purchased anywhere. I sometimes take long walks and several photos and I cannot afford to have my camera go dead when doing so. In addition, the very large (12) megapixel size means that some photo editing software no longer works (Such as Microsoft photo editor) – my previous camera was 5.3 MP and took excellent photos. 12 MP just seems to be an overkill.

When I bought this camera I hadn’t been looking for a new digital camera for very long, my old one was really nice but it was bulky and outdated…I liked that this camera was small but not too tiny, it was a really good value…an 8mp w/ lots of extras for under 0!! ( even the HP home site couldn’t compare with Amazon’s deal + free shipping )and overall it seemed pretty idiot proof… ( I am completely challenged when it comes to electronics ) When I got it I was so excited to try it out…I took it to my daughter’s dance watch night and with the video feature recorded her dance numbers ( with the extra SD memory card I bought ) It was very easy to upload the video and pictures I took onto the computer using the software it came with…I even figured out how to email all of it to out of town realatives without being reduced to tears! I would absolutely buy this camera again and would recommend it to anyone, the only suggestion that I have would be to get either a set of good rechargable batteries or lithium ion batteries…they may cost more now but they are well worth it…also, investing in an extra memory card or two is probably a good idea if you plan to use your camera a lot…I got a 2GB memory card on Amazon for !! You won’t find a better deal then that anywhere !!

I gave this camera a 1-day trial. Fair or not, here are my impressions.

The good: It really took some great pictures. Also for a camera that takes AA batteries it has a small form factor almost in the subcompact category. Delete button is handy for deleting unwanted pictures. Flash button is handy for turning flash on/off or to red-eye flash. Cool Panorama feature although you might need a tripod for it to really work seamlessly. Menus are straightforward.

The bad: Battery compartment door is hard to shut and it feels like it would break over time. The tiny slider that switches from camera to movie mode to display mode is flimsy and clumsy to use especially if you want to stop in movie mode. Movie mode is only 320×240 at 24fps. Limited options. Flash recharge time is long. Sometimes focuses on things other than your subject. Size. IT’s not big, but not as nice and sexy as a true subcompact.

the ugly: The USB port is on the bottom of the camera which means you either have to lay the camera on its front or back when hooking the camera up to your pc. In other words you get to choose whether you would like to scratch the front of your camera or the back. (Ok you can buy a tiny soft pillow to lay your camera on.) The lcd display gets a nod here as well. It’s just not that good. It doesn’t do a good job of communicating whether or not you took a great photo. I felt the Canons that I previously used were much better in this regard. And another annoying thing was the camera seems to take a picture a half-second after you want it to even if you halfway hold down the shutter button to charge up the flash. It’s also not a winner in the looks department. IT looks clunky. Last the zoom is not that good. The buttons don’t feel that great and the zoom sorta “skips” rather than zooms in/out.

All in all this camera is a great value if you want pictures equal to the top point and shoot cameras and you want AA batteries and yet are willing to put up with its clunkiness. To be fair I am used to Canon cameras and so some of the clunkiness may be interpreted (perhaps) as just “not Canon.”

For now it’s hard to beat in terms of money spent to get a great picture. Still I decided to return it and get a Canon SD1000is instead. IN a few weeks I’ll see if it was worth it.

… after two previous attempts at buying my mother a decent digital camera with ease of operation, battery charge and a basic point and click with flash – this one FINALLY hit the mark! YEAH! She’s 68 and has a bit of difficulty with dexterity and understanding how to make this “thing” work ~smile~ Fortunatly, she is able to take the camera to the local drug store if necessary and they will pull out her memory card and let her go through her own picture taking, help her to size and crop if she wants to and either print out prints and/or put it on a cd for her at a very low cost so she is happy with it and I am too. HP also provides a docking station now that I can sit on her printer so she can print her own photos now directly from that if she wants to and she likes that feature as well (although she is still learning how to do it.) It’s very easy to learn and very light weight too. The picture quality is great at a +5 MP! For this price – can’t go wrong.

I like this camera so much that I bought two more after owning the original for several years….It has more features and menus that would take a lifetime to master, fortunatly I need to use but a dozen or so…..compact, sturdy metal front, nice weighted feel, choice of megapixel settings, great pictures, nice video and sound,two viewing methods, panorama photos, docking station available, etc,,, and best of all, the later two camera cost me under 80 bucks each from different interenet sources…..whereas the first was about 275.00,,,,,,hightly recommended and without a day of problems for any…..(one went to my wife, one to a relative, and then my own)
